Cycling is a healthy, low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels. It is also fun, good for the environment and cheap!!!
Regular physical activity such as cycling can help protect you from serious diseases such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, mental illness and arthritis – so hit the road to help reduce your risk of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle!
Did you know that it only takes 2-4 hours a week to gain an improvement in your overall health and fitness?!
Low impact –meaning it causes less strain and injuries than most other forms of physical exercise.
Good for strength and stamina – meaning that you will increase your stamina, strength and aerobic fitness.
A fantastic muscle workout – meaning that it uses all of the major muscle groups as you pedal.
Easy – meaning that unlike some other sports, it doesn’t require high levels of physical skill. Most people know how to ride a bike and once learned – you don’t forget.
A fun way to get fit – meaning the feel good factor achieved when being outdoors makes you more likely to cycle regularly compared to other activities that require you to be inside or require special times or places.
As hard as you want to make it – meaning you can start at a low rate of intensity and if you want, build up to a demanding physical workout.
It is also very important to cycle safely. Please make sure you:-
- practice in a safe environment
- Wear a helmet
- be seen and heard
- check your bike regularly
- be alert and plan your route
- always follow the highway code
Although cycling is low impact and puts much less stresses and strains on your muscles, bones and joints – as with all forms of exercise, please make sure it is the right form of exercise for you!
