Massage and Stress – How we can help!

Now is the perfect opportunity to have one of our fabulous massages to help you de-stress at what is one of the most stressful situations our planet is going through!

Stress – What is it exactly?

Stress is primarily a physical response.  When stressed, the body thinks it is under attack and switches to “fight or flight” mode, this in turn releases a complex cocktail of hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine to prepare the body for physical action.

This in turn causes a number of reactions, from blood being diverted to the muscles to shutting down unnecessary bodily functions such as digestion.

That feeling of the heart pounding and fast breathing is the adrenaline – it enables the body to focus it’s attention to be able to respond to the current situation.

The challenge is when the body goes into a state of stress in inappropriate situations.  When blood flow is going only to the most important muscles needed for “fight or flight”, brain function is minimised.  This can lead to an inability to think properly.  If the body is kept in a state of stress for long periods it can be extremely detrimental to our health.

So how can massage help?

The emotional balance a massage provides can be just as vital and valuable as the physical benefits!

Did you know that a 60 minute massage can lower cortisol levels by an average of 30%?  When cortisol levels decline, serotonin – one of the body’s feel good hormones and natural pain killers, increases by an average 28%!
