Is pregnancy a pain in the back?

Back pain in pregnancy is a very common complaint, and for many women aches and pains in the lower back are all part of the experience!

A staggering 50% of pregnant women will experience back pain at some point during their pregnancy.

However, we must not lose sight of the fact that back pain is a sign that something is off balance.  Luckily, relief may be just a Chiropractic visit away!

There may be many reasons as to why pain and inflammation can be present in the low back during pregnancy and here are some common causes:

  • General weight gain can add pressure to the spine
  • As the body releases hormones in preparation for birth, joints and ligaments will loosen and soften
  • Changes in posture
  • As the stomach and hips expand to accommodate a growing baby, your centre of gravity shifts
  • The position of the baby may put extra pressure on the low back
  • Stress

During pregnancy, it is not necessary to wait until you have pain to see a Chiropractor. Many women find that continual Chiropractic treatments help them to adjust before pain and injury occur.

Whilst some Chiropractors specialise in treating pregnant women, rest assured all Chiropractors are trained to treat pregnant women safely and effectively.

While some cases of back pain during pregnancy are easy to resolve others can be more difficult to control.

Unfortunately, there is little to be done about the fact that hormonal changes make the joints and ligaments softer during pregnancy, however, with regular Chiropractic treatment improved flexibility can help pregnant women to prevent slips, falls and sprains that can result from stepping with too much force.

Benefits of seeing a Chiropractor during pregnancy

  1. The biggest benefit is that it helps to relieve pain
  2. It is a drug-free non-invasive option for relieving aches and pains
  3. Chiropractors will identify the root cause of the pain and treat it accordingly
  4. Chiropractic adjustments prevent tightness and will address joint misalignments
