Buttock and leg pain – we can probably help!
Buttock and leg pain can be extremely hard to live with affecting your mobility, comfort, and quality of life. If this is you, you may be suffering from Sacroiliac Joint Syndrome!
What are Sacroiliac joints?
These joints sit where the lower spine and pelvis meet. Sacroiliac Joint Syndrome can cause pain and stiffness in the low back, buttock, and leg. The pain might radiate into one or both legs. Climbing stairs, sitting, or standing for prolonged periods of time often make the pain worse.
The sacroiliac joints are some of the biggest joints in your body, and you use them every time you move or shift your hips. Sacroiliac Joint Syndrome happens when something irritates or damages one or both of your sacroiliac joints. This irritation leads to inflammation which causes pain that you would usually feel in your low back, buttock, and leg.
Causes
Causes for this joint problem include:
- Arthritis – the wear and tear of arthritis – also known as osteoarthritis can occur in the sacroiliac joints. A type of arthritis that particularly affects the spine is known as ankylosing spondylitis.
- Pregnancy – the sacroiliac joints loosen and stretch for childbirth. The added weight and changed way of walking during pregnancy can put extra stress on these joints.
- Injury – a sudden impact, such as a fall or a road traffic accident can damage these joints.
- Infection – it is rare, but these joints can become infected.
- Repetitive stress – some sports and work activities put repeated stress on these joints, including contact sports and heavy lifting. Jobs that require prolonged sitting or standing might also contribute to the problem.
- Older age – degeneration of the joints due to the aging process.
- Abnormal walking pattern or leg length differences – the way you walk and having one leg shorter than the other can put pressure on one side of the pelvis, causing wear and tear and misalignment of the sacroiliac joints.
- Scoliosis – this is a condition that causes a sideways curvature of the spine, which can affect the alignment of the spine and pelvis.
Symptoms
As discussed previously the pain caused by this condition occurs in the low back, buttock and leg or legs, the groin and even the feet. The pain can improve on movement, but the following can make the pain worse:
- Poor posture.
- Sleeping or sitting for a long time.
- Footwear, including high heels and footwear without a proper arch support.
- Standing for extended periods of time.
- Being overweight.
- Standing with more weight on one leg than the other.
- Stair climbing.
- Striding – taking large steps when moving forwards.
