6 Stress Busters!

stressStress can cause many different symptoms. It might affect how you feel physically, mentally and also how you behave. It’s not always easy to recognise when stress is the reason you’re feeling or acting differently.

If you’re stressed, whether by your job or something more personal, the first step to feeling better is to identify the cause.

The most unhelpful thing you can do is turn to something unhealthy to help you cope, such as smoking or drinking.  There is usually a solution to every problem and not taking control of the situation and doing nothing will only make your problem worse.

Try these 6 stress busting techniques to help you cope:-

  1. Try some relaxation activities, such as meditation, yoga, tai chi, breathing exercises and muscle relaxation. Programs are available online, in smartphone apps, and at many gyms and community centers.
  2. Take good care of your body each day. Exercise won’t make your stress disappear, but it will reduce some of the emotional intensity that you’re feeling, clearing your thoughts and letting you deal with your problems more calmly. Eating right, exercising and getting enough sleep help your body handle stress much better.
  3. Stay positive and practice gratitude, acknowledging the good parts of your day or life.  Look for the positives in life, and things for which you’re grateful. Try writing down 3 things that went well, or for which you’re grateful, at the end of every day.
  4. Changing a difficult situation isn’t always possible.  Accept that you can’t control everything. Find ways to let go of worry about situations you cannot change.  Try to concentrate on the things you do have control over.
  5. Learn to say “no” to additional responsibilities when you are too busy or stressed.
  6. Stay connected with people who keep you calm, make you happy, provide emotional support and help you with practical things. A friend, family member,  or neighbor  can become a good listener or share responsibilities so that stress doesn’t become overwhelming. A good support network of colleagues, friends and family can ease your work troubles and help you see things in a different way. The activities we do with friends help us relax. We often have a good laugh with them, which is an excellent stress reliever.

Stress can be a short-term issue or a long-term problem, depending on what changes in your life. Regularly using stress management techniques can help you avoid most physical, emotional and behavioral symptoms of stress.
