Migraines V Tension Headaches

We have all suffered at one time or another with headaches or migraines, whether mild or severe, they can be quite debilitating and can literally ruin your day!

But how do headaches differ from migraines?

A headache is caused by the contraction of muscles between the head and the neck.  Signs and symptoms of a tension headache include:-

  • Dull, aching head pain
  • Sensation of tightness or pressure across your forehead or on the sides and back of your head
  • Tenderness on your scalp, neck and shoulder muscles

Most tension headaches will go away with simple pain relievers such as aspirin or ibuprofen, however if the symptoms persist, it may be time to see your Chiropractor or Massage Therapist!

Research has shown that spinal manipulation is an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.

Massage is also an effective treatment and works by easing the pressure brought on during an episode by focusing on the neck, shoulders and head, thereby decreasing the pain and discomfort brought on by the headache.

A migraine is very different from other headaches and can range from moderate to severe throbbing pain at the front or side of your head.  It can be unrelenting and carry on for days at a time.

Signs and symptoms of a migraine include:-

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Light sensitivity
  • Sensitivity to sound or smells
  • Blurred vision
  • Temporary visual disturbances (aura)

Chiropractic treatments aren’t a cure all for everyone suffering from migraines, however almost a quarter of migraine sufferers who visit a Chiropractor notice a reduction in their symptoms of up to 90%!

Massage can also help by not only relieving the pressure on the affected muscles but evidence suggests that massage may help reduce the number of attacks!
